Sydney Town Hall Ballroom, 1994-1995

Role: Choreographer
Credited as: Ray Mathers (original event materials)

The National Hairdressing Industry Trust Gala (NHIT) was one of the major annual industry events of the mid‑1990s, staged at Sydney Town Hall Ballroom and produced as a large‑scale live showcase of Australia’s leading hair, fashion, and creative talent. I worked as choreographer across two consecutive years, 1994 and 1995, contributing movement direction, parading structure, and finale sequencing for a multi‑segment production involving designers, stylists, models, and live performance.

The events brought together many of the recognised industry leaders of the time, with choreography positioned as an integral creative element alongside hair, fashion, and styling. My role sat within the core production team rather than as an adjunct performance layer, reflecting the scale, complexity, and professional expectations of the gala.

Creative and Industry Collaborations

In the months leading up to the event and through live delivery, Raymond worked in close collaboration with Pam Petherbridge, coordinating performers, rehearsals, and on-site execution. The engagement was delivered in partnership with Kirby Productions, following a professional referral by Candy Lane (later Dancing With the Stars NZ), and formed part of a broader practice contributing to national industry events, tours, and corporate showcases across the Australian hair, fashion, and performance sectors.

Pam Petherbridge, across national and regional fashion and bridal events. Prior collaborations included The Golden Gown (Wagga Wagga) and The Taree Flair Awards, preceding her later leadership role with the Sydney Bridal Expo.

Candy Lane, through ballroom and movement collaborations. Candy later became widely recognised through Dancing With the Stars New Zealand, reflecting a shared lineage from competitive ballroom into televised and large‑scale performance contexts.

Kirby Productions, the producing company behind the National Hairdressing Industry Trust Gala. I worked on multiple events for Kirby Productions across this period, indicating an ongoing professional relationship built on trust and repeat engagement. These included the Speedo official launch for the Atlanta Olympic Games at Sydney Aquatic Centre, Hair Expo, the Westfield National Tour featuring The Richard Tyler Collection, each involving large-scale live production, fashion presentation, and complex staging.

Production Context

The National Hairdressing Industry Trust Gala functioned both as a high‑profile creative showcase and as a fundraising event supporting industry development and training programs. Productions involved complex cueing, live music, parading sequences, and large casts, requiring precise coordination between choreography, staging, fashion presentation, and technical production.

Official materials from the period, including event flyers and Kirby Productions run sheets, document my involvement and credit the choreography role within the production framework.
