Before the establishment of ART1,
my creative life unfolded across
many disciplines and contexts. 

Over time, these experiences have revealed a clear creative and professional lineage. The following credits reflect selected work across theatre, screen, education, galleries, photography, digital media, and live production. Together, they trace the foundations of a practice that eventually found its home in ART1.

Dancing Days

Studio 112
112 Oxford Street (1950s–1990s)

My formal training and early professional grounding began at Studio 112.
Ballroom dance studio operated by Charles Froulop and Ivy Paton, serving as a teaching base, rehearsal space, and professional hub within Sydney’s ballroom dance community for several decades.

Hong Kong 1984
Selected to represent Australia at the Hong Kong International, Amateur Ballroom Dancing Championship.

Dirty Dancing and Hong Kong 1988
In 1988 Raymond Mather and Sonia Kruger competed in Australia's Dirty Dancing phenomenon, following their Hong Kong Bicentenary ballroom performances.

Dance Avenue
Drummoyne Civic Cretre, Sydney (1992-1999

Founded and directed Dance Avenue, a weekly ballroom dance school and large-scale social dance program operating every Friday and Saturday night, serving as a major hub for social ballroom dancing in Sydney throughout the 1990s.

Cha Cha Charity Ball
Founder, Event Director, Producer (1993-late 1990s)
Founded and produced an annual formal ballroom charity ball in Sydney, extending the Dance Avenue community into large-scale philanthropic event production.

Short feature film (2009)
Stills Photographer

Stills photographer for the short feature film Higher Plane, producing on-set imagery documenting the film’s visual and narrative development.

Spider & Rose
Feature film (1994)
Movement Consultant

Worked as Movement Consultant on the feature film Spider & Rose, on location in Mudgee, contributing to physical character development and the film’s movement language.

During production, the set was visited by At the Movies hosts Margaret Pomeranz and David Stratton.

National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA)
Guest Tutor, Movement, Dance & Ballroom Technique
Conducted guest tutoring sessions for students including Michael Campbell (later editor of Keith Bain: The Principles of Movement) and Gavin Robins (now Movement Director, NIDA).

University Western Sydney (UWS)
Guest Tutor, Movement and Performance
Invited by Yana Taylor to deliver movement and performance workshops for acting students over one semester. Alumni from these sessions include Melissa Rogan and Don Hany, both of whom have gone on to significant Australian screen and stage careers.

St Augustine’s Primary School, Coffs Harbour
Institutional Photography and Visual Communications

Commissioned to produce a comprehensive photographic library documenting student learning, classroom practice, community life, and school culture. The imagery was used extensively across strategic planning documents, prospectuses, website publications, and official communications, supporting the school’s public identity and long-term development initiatives.

Private Tuition
Movement and dance coaching for Ralph Fiennes during the filming of Oscar and Lucinda in Australia, delivered as part of his professional physical and performance preparation.

Publishing, Documentary Photography, and Community Projects

The Most Interesting Person I Know (MIPIK)
Community documentary photography and publishing project (2014–2018)

Principal Photographer for the MIPIK platform and published book, producing portrait and documentary photography profiling over sixty individuals from the Coffs Coast region. Imagery was used across digital publication, print, media promotion, and live events. The project culminated in a published book and public presentations, with proceeds supporting the CanDo Cancer Trust.

EMSLA 2018
Assistant Curator, Exhibition Installation & Official Event Photographer (2018)

Working alongside Dr Leigh Summers and Dr Mal Eutick OAM, assisted with exhibition installation, curatorial preparation, and official photographic documentation of the Eutick Memorial Still Life Award (EMSLA) at Project Contemporary Artspace, Wollongong. Responsibilities included exhibition photography, opening night documentation, artist and audience coverage, and the creation of archival imagery for the award.

The opening night featured soprano Amelia Farrugia, the Mendoza Tango Quartet, and composer Elena Kats-Chernin. A portrait photographed during the event was subsequently selected as a finalist in the 2018 Percival Photographic Portrait Prize.

Principal photographer delivering integrated studio and location imagery documenting product systems, manufacturing workflows, warehouse operations, and distribution processes. Developed in collaboration with the Marketing Director and web design team for corporate, digital, and promotional platforms.

NHIT, Sydney Town Hall
Choreography and movement direction

The National Hairdressing Industry Trust (NHIT) presented a major hair and fashion event at Sydney Town Hall. Raymond worked closely with the NHIT organising committee, shaping performance flow, staging, and movement direction for large-scale live presentations alongside leading fashion designers and hair stylists.

Sydney Powerhouse Museum - Tea Dances (1992 and 1993)
Host, Facilitator, and Dance Presenter

In 1992 and 1993, I led and facilitated a series of ballroom tea dances at the Sydney Powerhouse Museum, transforming the Turbine Hall into a vibrant social dance space for members and visitors. The events were formally programmed by the Powerhouse Museum and regularly attracted audiences of over 100 participants, demonstrating strong public engagement and repeat attendance.

Sydney Football Stadium - Strictly Football (1992)
Choreographer and Director

Raymond Mather choreographed and directed a large-scale ballroom dance production presented as halftime entertainment during the 1992 Winfield Cup Grand Final at the Sydney Football Stadium.

The performance was staged live on Sunday, 27 September 1992, to Love Is in the Air, performed live on stage by John Paul Young, and presented to an audience of approximately 41,000 spectators.

Sing Along Mary Poppins - Cremorne Orpheum (2001)
Event Photographer

Engaged as event photographer for a live screening and participatory performance of Sing Along Mary Poppins held in the Main Theatre at the Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace, featuring drag performer Portia Turbo and live accompaniment on The Mighty Wurlitzer by Neil Jensen.
