Belvoir Street Theatre - The Gates of Egypt (2007)
Choreographer / Movement Director
The Gates of Egypt marked a significant and deeply resonant collaboration with Belvoir Street Theatre under the direction of Kate Gaul, whose return to Belvoir brought renewed clarity and emotional precision to Stephen Sewell’s provocative work.
Kate invited me into the process to shape the movement language of the production, work that sat at the intersection of gesture, stillness, and psychological tension rather than overt choreography. The task was not to decorate the text, but to support its emotional architecture: bodies holding what language could not always articulate.

Production Script (2006)
Working script for The Gates of Egypt, Company B / Belvoir Street Theatre
Written by Stephen Sewell in the shadow of the Israel–Lebanon conflict, The Gates of Egypt moves between suburban Australia and the ancient weight of history, asking where peace begins, globally, politically, and within the family. Movement in this context became a quiet carrier of meaning: restraint, fracture, hesitation, and human vulnerability embedded in posture and transition.

Working at Belvoir Street Theatre, with its lineage of rigorous, actor-centred practice, demanded precision and sensitivity. The cast, led by Lynette Curran, brought extraordinary depth, allowing movement to emerge organically from character rather than imposed form. My role was to listen closely, respond intuitively, and offer a physical vocabulary that honoured both performer and text.
