A miniature red cowboy boot stands against an orange figure in this intensely coloured contemporary still life from Raymond Mather’s Cliché Life series.

The principal objects occupy the right side of the composition while a green figure, white forms and repeated red boots recede through progressively softer planes of focus. The result transforms a collection of tiny objects into an unexpectedly expansive visual landscape.

Strong reds, orange and green are held against a predominantly white field, with turquoise appearing at the edge of the scene. Repetition allows the cowboy boot to appear simultaneously as object, motif and distant echo.

The deliberately shallow depth of field destabilises scale and distance, turning familiar decorative objects into an ambiguous miniature world.
