Cliche Life - Bottoms Up - 90x60cm Horizontal (#266721v1)

Green, yellow and red figures are isolated within individual glasses, transforming the familiar drinking vessel into a series of transparent enclosures. Their simple human-like forms contrast with the weight, reflections and optical distortions of the glass surrounding them.

Arranged against a predominantly white field, the three glasses create a restrained triangular composition. Refraction, reflection and transparency introduce subtle repetitions of colour and form, while the figures appear simultaneously protected, displayed and contained.

The title Bottoms Up introduces the familiar celebratory expression associated with drinking, but the figures themselves remain motionless within their vessels. The resulting image shifts between humour and ambiguity, allowing an everyday phrase and commonplace objects to acquire a more uncertain psychological dimension.

Part of Cliché Life, the work continues Raymond Mather’s exploration of familiar expressions through staged objects, visual association and photographic transformation.

Printed on museum-grade archival cotton rag paper using archival pigment inks. Each work is individually signed and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.
