Colourful miniature figures emerge among a scattered collection of metal baking cutters in Breaking the Mould - 266796v1, part of Raymond Mather’s ongoing Cliché Life series.
An orange figure occupies the foreground, surrounded by reflective metal forms, while yellow, green and red figures appear at varying depths throughout the composition. The rigid manufactured shapes of the cutters contrast with the brightly coloured figures standing independently among them.
Using selective focus, reflection and repetition, the photograph transforms simple domestic objects into a layered visual field. The sharply defined orange figure becomes the principal point of attention while surrounding figures and metallic forms gradually dissolve into softer planes.
The familiar expression “breaking the mould” is translated literally through the staged arrangement, introducing ideas of individuality, conformity and departure from established patterns without resolving the image into a single interpretation.
Part of Cliché Life, the work continues Raymond Mather’s use of commonplace objects, familiar language and constructed photography to reconsider expressions embedded in everyday culture.
Printed on museum-grade archival cotton rag paper using archival pigment inks. Each work is individually signed and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.
