Cliche Life - Buckle Up - 90x60cm Horizontal (#266946v1)

Oversized belt buckles surround brightly coloured miniature figures in Buckle Up - 266946v1, part of Raymond Mather’s ongoing Cliché Life series.

A red figure stands within the opening of a polished silver buckle while an orange figure appears behind the dark rectangular frame of another. Additional buckles overlap and recede behind them, transforming familiar functional objects into an unexpectedly architectural environment.

Against the clean white setting, the polished metal, black surface and translucent colour create a composition built around frames within frames. The figures appear simultaneously protected, contained and exposed, introducing a subtle tension beneath the work’s playful construction.

Taking the familiar instruction “buckle up” literally, the photograph shifts the expression away from its everyday association with safety and preparedness and into a staged visual narrative.

Part of Cliché Life, the work continues Raymond Mather’s transformation of familiar language and commonplace objects through constructed photographic still life.
