Arranged like a small gathering, the translucent figures appear surrounded by the familiar remnants of festivity. One red figure has collected pieces of confetti across its body and head, while the others stand comparatively untouched, creating subtle differences within an otherwise orderly group.

The brilliant colour and celebratory material suggest playfulness, depicting celebration in progress, and at the same time, the photograph presents the aftermath, or perhaps the expectation, of celebration.

By reducing the familiar language of festivity to figures, colour and scattered decoration, Celebration Time plays with the distance between the appearance of happiness and the experience of it.

Part of Cliché Life, the work continues Raymond Mather’s use of commonplace objects and familiar expressions to construct photographic narratives that shift between humour, observation and ambiguity.

Printed on museum-grade archival cotton rag paper using archival pigment inks. Each work is individually signed and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.
