Four brightly coloured miniature figures gather beneath a sweeping circle of colour in Circle of Friends - 267084v1, part of Raymond Mather’s ongoing Cliché Life series.

Orange, green, yellow and red figures form a compact group against concentric bands of yellow, green and pink. The circular form rises behind them like an oversized halo, visually enclosing the figures within a shared space.

Drawing on the familiar expression “circle of friends”, the photograph turns language into a playful constructed still life. Individual figures remain distinct in colour, orientation and character, yet their close arrangement suggests companionship, inclusion and the bonds that create a community.

The simplicity of the arrangement is countered by saturated colour, translucent surfaces and the exaggerated scale of the circle behind them. What begins as a humorous collection of commonplace objects becomes an image about individuality within collective belonging.

Part of Cliché Life, the work transforms familiar phrases into staged photographic compositions through everyday objects, visual association and humour.
