Colourful miniature figures emerge from a landscape of oversized pearls and crystalline forms in Diamond and Pearls - 266598v1, part of Raymond Mather’s ongoing Cliché Life photographic series.

Red and yellow figures occupy the foreground while green and orange forms recede into the distance, creating an unexpected sense of scale and spatial depth. Imitation pearls and transparent faceted objects become an extravagant landscape through close-up photography and selective focus.

Drawing on the familiar association of diamonds and pearls with wealth, status and luxury, the work playfully unsettles conventional ideas of preciousness. Everyday decorative materials are enlarged and transformed, allowing imitation, desire and perceived value to become part of the image.

Part of Cliché Life, the work uses familiar sayings, objects and cultural associations as material for constructed photographic still life.
