Colourful gummy figures inhabit an arrangement of artificial roses in Everything’s Coming Up Roses - 266382v1, part of Raymond Mather’s ongoing Cliché Life photographic series.

Red, orange and yellow figures stand before a cluster of red, white and pink roses, while a green figure appears elevated among the flowers. The familiar optimism of the expression “everything’s coming up roses” is transformed into a miniature constructed world in which confectionery figures appear to occupy an impossibly perfect floral landscape.

Artificial flowers and brightly coloured sweets deliberately blur distinctions between the desirable, the decorative and the manufactured. What initially appears cheerful and celebratory becomes a playful examination of the idealised promise embedded within the familiar phrase.

Part of Cliché Life, the photograph uses commonplace objects and familiar language to turn everyday expressions into literal, slightly absurd visual narratives.
