Colourful gummy figures emerge from a densely layered landscape of beads and jewellery in Hidden Gems - 266603v1, part of Raymond Mather’s ongoing Cliché Life photographic series.

Translucent beads, faceted forms, pearls and saturated colour create a miniature world in which familiar figures appear, disappear and compete for attention. Shallow focus allows some elements to emerge sharply while others dissolve into colour and light, requiring the viewer to search through the composition.

The familiar expression “hidden gems” usually describes something valuable or remarkable that remains overlooked or undiscovered. Here, the phrase becomes literal and deliberately ambiguous: gems are concealed throughout the image, while the small figures themselves appear as unexpected discoveries within the surrounding abundance.

Part of Cliché Life, the work transforms a familiar expression through humour, scale, colour and photographic observation.
