Losing Your Marbles - 266613v1 transforms the familiar expression into a miniature scene of containment coming undone.

A mesh bag filled with glass marbles lies open across a reflective surface as several marbles escape into the foreground. Among them, brightly coloured gummy figures stand inside, behind and beyond the collapsing net, appearing almost as participants in the unfolding disorder.

The translucent greens of the glass, the delicate white geometry of the mesh and isolated flashes of orange, red and yellow create a playful composition in which order and chaos coexist. What begins as a literal bag of marbles gradually becomes a small narrative about things slipping loose, escaping control and scattering beyond their boundaries.

Part of Raymond Mather’s ongoing Cliché Life series, the photograph gives physical form to the expression “losing your marbles”, using familiar objects, humour and visual association to reveal the imagery embedded within everyday language.
