Plenty of Fish in the Sea - 266390v1, colourful gummy figures emerge from a scattered field of translucent fish-shaped objects in Plenty of Fish in the Sea, a literal interpretation of one of the familiar reassurances associated with relationships, rejection and starting again.

An orange figure stands prominently among the fish while other figures recede into the softly focused background. The abundance promised by the familiar expression becomes an absurd miniature landscape of possibilities, alternatives and uncertainty.

Playful at first glance, the photograph leaves open a more complicated question: does having endless possibilities actually make choosing, belonging or beginning again any easier?

Part of Raymond Mather’s ongoing Cliché Life series, the photograph uses familiar objects, visual humour and literal interpretation to reconsider the phrases through which everyday experiences are routinely explained.
