Removed from its familiar context and dramatically enlarged through photography, the tiny confectionery form takes on an unexpected physical presence. Its translucent body emerges from the surrounding grey-white space while reflections, seams and folds create an ambiguous environment somewhere between packaging, enclosure and weightlessness.

The familiar expression sleep like a baby suggests comfort, innocence and peaceful rest. Here, isolation and containment introduce a quieter uncertainty, allowing the commonplace object to move between humour, tenderness and unease.

Part of Raymond Mather's ongoing Cliché Life series, the work uses constructed still life and changes of scale to reconsider familiar objects and everyday expressions.
