Photographed at close range and dramatically enlarged, the familiar confectionery form becomes an ambiguous sleeping presence. Its curled horizontal position suggests rest, while the surrounding folds, reflections and pale surfaces transform ordinary packaging into an almost weightless environment.

The familiar expression sleep like a baby evokes innocence, comfort and uninterrupted rest. Here, the cliché is interpreted literally, but changes in scale and context allow the playful object to become something quieter and less certain.

Part of Raymond Mather's ongoing Cliché Life series, the work uses constructed still life, humour and shifts of scale to reconsider familiar objects and everyday expressions.
