Cliché Life is Raymond Mather’s witty reimagining of the still life tradition. For centuries, still life has arranged objects, fruit, flowers, glassware, as symbols of culture, wealth, or mortality. In this contemporary twist, brightly coloured gummy figures take centre stage, animated into humorous scenes that echo familiar idioms, sayings, and the absurdities of modern life.

Instead of the solemn symbolism of vanitas, these sticky little characters confront everyday clichés with satire and charm. From “ducks in a row” to “caught in a trap,” each composition balances the timeless still life impulse to freeze a moment in time with the Pop-influenced vibrancy of contemporary photography. The result is both playful and thought provoking, inviting us to laugh at ourselves while recognising the deeper truths hidden within cliché.
