Cliche Life

Cliché Life is a contemporary still life fine art photography series by Australian fine art photographer Raymond Mather, created for ART1 Fine Art Photography. The collection playfully reimagines familiar sayings, idioms and everyday expressions through colour, humour and visual wit.

Miniature figures, ordinary objects, altered scale, literalised language, humour and a little psychological ambiguity.

Drawing on the long tradition of still life photography, where objects have historically symbolised wealth, morality, or mortality, this series replaces solemn symbolism with brightly coloured gummy figures and contemporary visual language.

Animated into humorous tableaux, the works reference well-known idioms and expressions, from everyday clichés to shared cultural shorthand. What begins as playful imagery gradually reveals deeper observations about habit, expectation, and the stories we tell ourselves through repetition.
